Skutina March Guide
In the Eagle Mountains of Czechia stands an artillery fortress that was never finished. Every January, marchers tour its underground, then they walk. In January 2027, Rucking Tough carries that march worldwide: the Podzemní pochod Skutina — the Underground March.
The Fortress They Never Finished
In December 1937, work crews broke ground on a mountainside in the Orlické hory, the Eagle Mountains of northeastern Bohemia. The hill was called Skutina, elevation 736 meters, and the Czechoslovak Army intended to build one of the strongest artillery fortresses in its new border defense system there.
The plans were serious. Six combat objects were to stand on the surface, connected below ground by a main gallery stretching 1,350 meters. A garrison of 484 men would live and fight from inside the hill — in casemates, magazines, and machine rooms carved out of rock, supplied to hold their ground cut off from the surface if it came to that.
It never came to that, because the fortress was never finished. By the autumn of 1938, only two of the six planned objects stood in concrete: the infantry blockhouses N-S 48 "U stodol" and N-S 49. The galleries between them were excavated but never lined with concrete. Then history moved on — the borderlands were handed over, the army stood down, and the unfinished fortress was left to the mountain. Much of its underground is inaccessible today, parts of it flooded, the constant temperature down there holding at six to eight degrees.
What could have been erased was instead kept. The site is now a museum, cared for by the Klub přátel tvrze Skutina, and the underground that does remain open is cold, damp, and honest about what it is: a monument to work interrupted. Remarkably, the story is still being written — in 2026 the museum obtained permits to blast the final 28 meters of gallery between N-S 48 and N-S 49, completing, 88 years later, a connection the builders of 1938 never got to make.
Every January, Pochodnický spolek holds the Podzemní pochod Skutina at the fortress — the Underground March. In Czechia it is a winter march paired with a tour of that underground: you go down into the cold first, and then you walk. It is a deliberate pairing. The march does not just pass the fortress; it asks you to carry what the fortress means.
The Standard
The live march steps off on Saturday, January 23, 2027. From wherever you are, the standard is the same spirit carried a different way: choose 10 km or 30 km, complete it in one calendar day, GPS-tracked, and submit your GPS record after march day for verification. No uniform is required. What is required is the effort — and a willingness to learn the story before you earn the medal.
What You Earn
- The Skutina medal — individually numbered, in its box, with pin ribbon and rail ribbon bar. The back carries the fortress blockhouse and your medal's individual number.
- The decree — the certificate, completed with your name, your route, and your medal number.
- The Skutina 2027 patch — the cloth Velcro patch: a deep-red shield bearing a white wolf's head, "SKUTINA – 2027" across the top.
The medals are produced to reservation after registration closes — a limited, numbered issue, and no second edition is expected.
How Registration Works
Registration opens November 12, 2026 and closes December 31, 2026 — initially a maximum of 250 registration slots. The price is $79 for everyone; there is no group pricing on Skutina. At registration, give your name exactly as it should print on your decree, and choose your route: 10 km or 30 km.
