Austrian Awards: The Virtuelle Marche & Marksmanship Badges Explained

Austria's awards come in two forms: a march you ruck, and a badge you shoot for. Here is how each one works — the distances, the medal progression, the marksmanship classes, and how verified completion earns the official award.

The Austrian Virtuelle Marche

Austrian Virtuelle Marche medal

Austria has a deep military marching tradition — soldiers and civilians testing themselves over distance, under load, in the Alps' shadow. The Virtuelle Marche is that tradition opened to the world: you march the distance where you are, during the event window, and your validated GPS track earns the official medal and certificate.

March 10 km, 20 km, or 40 km. The flagship standard is the 20 km continuous ruck with a 16 kg (35 lb) dry ruck, in uniform for service members, tracked from start to finish — date, time, route, and distance. There is no time limit; the ruck must be continuous and cannot be split across days.

One medal, a ladder of classes

Every successive march raises your class:

  • 1st march: Bronze
  • 2nd march: Silver
  • 3rd march: Gold
  • 4th march onward: Gold with a pendant — additional pendants up to stage 10 at the highest level

The Virtuelle Marche runs four times a year on quarterly windows, and registration includes the medal, ribbon, and certificate, with shipping included.

Austrian Marksmanship Badges

The second Austrian path is earned on the range, not the road. The Austrian marksmanship program is run as a live-fire group event: your unit or group shoots the qualification course, scores are verified from the targets, and the results go to Austria for confirmation before badges are issued.

  • Kombination — the combined badge: your rifle and pistol scores together, on a 200-point scale.
  • Rifle — the rifle qualification on its own.
  • Pistol — the pistol qualification on its own.

Each badge is awarded in Bronze, Silver, or Gold class according to the verified score — shooters who meet the standard receive the badge and certificate. Groups book the shoot through Rucking Tough; scores and target evidence are submitted for verification, and confirmed results are what the badges are issued against.

Looking for the German Shooting Badge? We don't offer it — the Austrian marksmanship program above is the shooting award we run. Groups can also pair an Austrian shoot with the Polish SSch Sniper Badge on the same range program; both are covered in the Foreign Badge Guide.

How It Works — The Mission-to-Medal Method

  1. Choose Your Mission — register right here on our site; checkout is secure.
  2. Ruck to the Standard — complete the distance and weight in one continuous ruck during the event window, anywhere in the world.
  3. Submit Your Evidence — a tracking screenshot plus a photo of you on the ruck.
  4. We Verify — we review your evidence and confirm your completion with the issuing organization.
  5. Earn It — your medal or badge, ribbon, and certificate ship to the address on your registration.

When will my award arrive? Medals take 10–12 weeks from the close of registration — covering confirmation, pickup, and shipping. We print labels before ship day so you can review your address; tracking goes live when your packet ships.

Questions

Are these official awards? Yes — the Virtuelle Marche medal and the marksmanship badges are issued through the Austrian organization after your completion or scores are confirmed.

Can civilians take part? Yes — civilians march the Virtuelle under the same standard, and civilian groups shoot in group range events. You don't have to be military to ruck tough.

Can I wear the badge on my uniform? Wear of foreign awards is governed by your service's regulations and your chain of command — Rucking Tough does not authorize uniform wear. The Foreign Badges page walks through the approval process.

Rucking or shooting — which first? Most groups start with the march. The Czech Military Marche deep-dive and the Foreign Badge Guide lay out every option side by side.
