Patrick Loftus

Where are you from?
South Boston, Massachusetts.

How did you get into rucking?
I served in the United States Marine Corps, so rucking has always been part of my background. Years later, I saw the Stop Soldier Suicide Memorial Ruck supporting veterans, signed up, and I was hooked.

Why do you ruck?
Rucking is a great way to get outdoors, clear my mind, and see the world. I enjoy it much more than running. I'll still do an occasional 5K or 10K to improve my pace, but rucking is my passion.

Favorite ruck so far?
Without a doubt, the 82nd Anniversary of D-Day in Normandy. I completed both the GORUCK 26.2 and the Rucking Tough GRIT D-Day event. It was an incredible experience and an honor to ruck where so many brave men fought and gave their lives for our freedom.

What is the hardest lesson you've learned on a ruck?
During the final leg of the Normandy GORUCK, from Pointe du Hoc back to Camp Maisy, I ran out of water with about eight miles to go. It was a hot day, and since the event had a time limit, we had to keep moving. I learned to always carry more water than I think I'll need. I'd rather finish with extra than run out again.

What is your go-to ruck setup?
My primary setup has been a USMC FILBE rucksack in Coyote Brown with the frame and waist belt, along with GORUCK T-Rex handles. I recently purchased a GORUCK Rucker 5.0 with a padded waist belt, and I'll be using that along with the T-Rex handles for future events.

What is your advice for new ruckers?
Get a quality pack, wear comfortable boots or sneakers that work for you, start with lighter weight, and just have fun. Don't compare yourself to anyone else. Just keep showing up, and the miles will take care of themselves.

What is the next event you are training for?
I'm training for the Rucking Tough Extortion 17 Memorial Ruck. I'll be completing the full 31-mile challenge this August in honor of the heroes of Extortion 17.

Fun fact about you outside of rucking
I'm a Boston Fire Department lieutenant and former U.S. Marine. When I'm not rucking, I enjoy traveling to historic battlefields, walking the ground where history was made, and learning about the people who shaped it.
