1SG Erick Sandi

Name: 1SG Erick Sandi

Where are you from? I am from Renton, WA, but was originally born in Costa Rica.

How did you get into rucking?

I joined the Army Reserve in 2005. Recently, I got a 1SG position on a Fitness Training Unit with a bunch of Drill Sergeants. As a former DS, I am required to ruck often, and FTU soldiers do short rucks weekly. I am trying to stay in shape and set a good example of motivation for my Drills, whom I hope will start joining me soon. I wanted to start something solid with regular rucks every month, and earning some of these medals adds extra motivation.

Why do you ruck?

Also, rucking makes me reflect, pray, and connect with God on the road.

What has been your favorite ruck so far?

So far, my favorite ruck is the NFM, short enough to be doable but long enough that you can burn yourself out if you don't pace yourself.

What is the hardest lesson you've learned on a ruck?

The hardest lesson I have learned in a ruck is hydration: start a couple of days prior and continue hydrating during the ruck, even if you are not thirsty.

What is your go-to ruck setup?

My go-to ruck setup is my old issued Large Alice pack, with a full sleeping system at the bottom, boots on the sides, and 5-lb plates on top to meet weight, pulling those straps to bring the weight up between the shoulders.

What advice would you give to a new rucker?

My advice for new ruckers: hydrate, know your pressure spots in your feet and tape or moleskin them ahead of the ruck, use foot powder and toe + regular socks on top, and don't forget to load up on good carbs the day prior.

What is the next event you're training for?

I am training for the Czech Military March in October and the NFM in Dec.

What is a fun fact about you outside of rucking?

I am a Catholic married man with 7 children, in my 2nd year of nursing school. My faith comes first, and family is everything to me. 21 years of service and counting!!!
