Mogadishu Memorial Ruck
Honor the Courage. Remember the Fallen.
Some battles are remembered because they changed history. Others are remembered because they revealed the extraordinary courage of ordinary men. The Battle of Mogadishu, fought on October 3–4, 1993, is one of those battles. What began as a mission expected to last less than one hour became an overnight fight for survival.
American Rangers, Delta Force operators, Night Stalker aviators, and Soldiers from the 10th Mountain Division found themselves surrounded in the streets of Mogadishu, Somalia. Cut off from support and facing overwhelming numbers, they fought block by block through one of the fiercest urban battles since the Vietnam War.
Throughout the night, one principle guided every decision: "No Man Left Behind."
Rescue convoys repeatedly drove into enemy fire. Helicopter crews continued flying despite the danger. Soldiers willingly exposed themselves to save wounded teammates. Others knowingly gave their lives so someone else could come home.
The courage displayed during those fifteen hours became one of the defining examples of selfless service in modern American military history. The Rucking Tough Mogadishu Memorial Ruck exists to ensure that courage—and the men who displayed it—are never forgotten.

The Mission
On October 3, 1993, Task Force Ranger launched Operation Gothic Serpent into the heart of Mogadishu with the objective of capturing key lieutenants serving under Somali warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid.
The mission was expected to be quick. Instead, rocket-propelled grenades struck two MH-60 Black Hawk helicopters. The first aircraft, Super 61, crashed deep inside hostile territory. Minutes later, Super 64 was also shot down.
The mission immediately changed from a capture operation into one of the largest combat rescue efforts in modern American military history. As darkness fell, hundreds of American Soldiers fought through unfamiliar streets under constant enemy fire while refusing to abandon their wounded or fallen brothers.

The Spirit of "No Man Left Behind"
Few moments better capture the American military ethos than the actions of Master Sergeant Gary Gordon and Sergeant First Class Randy Shughart. Knowing they would almost certainly be killed, they repeatedly requested permission to be inserted at the second crash site.
Once on the ground, they defended the wounded crew against overwhelming enemy forces until both men were killed in action. Their actions saved the life of Chief Warrant Officer Michael Durant.
For their extraordinary heroism, Gordon and Shughart became the first Medal of Honor recipients awarded for combat actions since the Vietnam War. Their sacrifice reminds us that courage is not the absence of fear—it is choosing others before yourself.
